Our History
God Has Given Us A Future!
In 1872, the Methodist Episcopal Society of Davison was organized. Two lots were purchased for $100 on the NE corner of Main and Third Street. By 1873 there were 66 members, and the first marriage ceremony was performed. The first baptism recorded was in 1875. By 1884 a bell was purchased. The bell was rung alternating with the one at the adjacent Baptist Church to display the two tones of the bells. In 1890, a parsonage was built by John Rockafellow, who was the contractor and a member of the church. Ice cream socials were held by the Ladies Aid Society to help raise funds for this event.
Over the years many major remodeling and relocating projects transpired. Church membership had grown to over 600 by 1960, and as the church membership kept growing, plans began for a new Education and Fellowship Building. The old parsonage still being used at this time was razed. Mr. Oren Minto was the contractor and also a member of the church. This multi purpose two level building has been used for many fellowship and Christian Education events, and is still in use today.
By 1967, church membership had reached 884 members, and so a new sanctuary was completed in 1970. Included in this building project were a new parlor, library, and church offices. The Narthex was built to connect the new sanctuary with the educational building. The West and South entrances were remodeled in 1993 and an elevator was added. The latest remodeling project was in the parsonage. In 1997, the parsonage building was lifted and moved down Third Street to allow for additional parking next to the church.
Although this history speaks largely of the building, this is not what the Davison United Methodist Church is about. The real church is made up of people– People who have placed their faith in Christ so that they can collectively be His body and carry out His work in this world. The members of Davison United Methodist Church have a vision: To be a vibrant, effective ministry positioned and prepared for future opportunities and challenges. To meet spiritual needs and create a sense of value and worth. To provide programming that will enrich the lives of everyone in the community. To provide support and counseling.
The future of Methodism is strong and alive at the Davison United Methodist Church!
